The Best Legacy We Could Give Our Children is a Whole Hearted Devotion to God

When I grew up in the 70’s China, we had no running water, no air conditioning. I had one babydoll that could open and close her eyes. That thing was a big deal for me.

So when I had my children, I couldn’t help but indulge them with toys, clothes, and vacations.

But I found out this simple truth — that my children have no concept of how fortunate they are. And when I think back, I didn’t know how lacking of everything my childhood was either.

Friends, really, the best legacy we can leave to our children is not money, possessions, or big houses. Yes, although these are nice, they cannot fill the void in their souls.

The great warrior and King David said to his son:

“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.” 1 Chronicle 28:9

Notice David opened the verse by acknowledging God as his father.

Likewise, as earthly parents, we should point our children to their Heavenly Father.

The truth is, it doesn’t matter how much we love our children, how much we do for our children, and how much we give to our children, their Heavenly Father always loves them more than us, will do more for them than us, and will give them more than us.

Because He knows our children’s hearts, understands their every desire and every thought. And He will give them the eternal treasure that no one else can provide.

Thus, in the midst of our hustle and bustle for our children’s future–transport them from one activity to the next, take them to the next best family vacation spots, model for them good manners, teach them to be good citizens…let’s not forget the most important thing we can do for them— point their hearts to Jesus.
